Overview

The A&R Deluxe Skate Bag is the Rolls Royce of skate bags. The deluxe skate bag is constructed of tough polyester and metal grommets for ventilation. To keep skates protected the deluxe skate bag features two individual zippered skate pockets. The smaller outer zipper pocket is ideal for holding skating accessories and personal items. The outside of the bag also includes a water bottle holder, a cell phone compartment, and a padded nylon webbed shoulder carrying strap.

Good inexpensive basic/beginner bagWith this bag, you get pretty much what it looks like. There's an A&R logo on the side of my bag (missing from the photo here), but it's relatively small and understated, not the garish gigantic one that you see in some photos online. The zippers are some no-name brand (not YKK). There's only a single slider per zipper, and it unzips up the spine of the bag first, which is the opposite direction I'd like. You can't open the top (the part you want to access) without first unzipping the spine (which makes the bag collapse on itself). The size of the main two sections is good. I have huge feet, and my skates (size 12) easily fit here. The base has 4 holes with metal eyelets, presumably for moisture. There's no feet of any kind, and the base is made of the same material as the sides, so it doesn't always want to sit flat. The third zippered section is a pretty good size, too, though unfortunately that's only on one side. The water bottle and cell phone pockets are both hilariously small and useless. The former could fit a 250mL can (Red Bull?), and the latter is narrower than even the original iPhone. You could probably store your Razr in this pocket, if you were living in 2005. The shoulder strap has a metal clip -- singular because it's permanently stitched on the other side. I have no idea why they chose this design, because it's the worst of both worlds. It's another piece to mess with (the D ring is always rotating the wrong way), and the strap can't be easily removed or replaced. Also, there's no handle, so the strap is the only way to carry the bag. While it's easy to find things to complain about, this is a decent bag -- for the price. "The Rolls Royce of skate bags" it is not, but nobody should expect that for this price. It's perfectly fine. Buy it, and put up with the niggles. With the money you saved, you can buy many hours of ice time. I don't expect it to last forever, and that's fine.

Comments: Overall, the bag is nice. Sturdy and roomy, enough room for skates, socks, a towel, a snack, and a sweater, but the outside pockets are a joke. I don't know of any water bottle that would fit in the "water bottle" pocket, it's incredibly tall and narrow. And the phone pocket is made for a phone from 2002, there is not a smart phone alive today that will fit in there. I guess you could use it for a granola bar, but I don't need a dedicated granola bar pocket. I'm returning it.
