Customer Reviews
I'm a total beginnerand I've been out to public skate a few times with these. They are comfortable even when tied really tight (as one has to do with ice skates, especially as a beginner). The laces are good and flat and not too slippery so they don't get loose, but slippery enough to slide through eyelets, so you can adjust tightness differently in different parts of shoe. There is enough lace to double-knot.
My feet are finicky about being in tight shoes so I was surprised to get a skate that worked on the first try. They seem to have a neutral, smooth foot shape inside and don't rub or press on my ankles or any hot spots on top of my foot but are snug enough to keep my foot and ankle immobilized (you could tie ankle/lower shin more loosely if you don't need that level of stability). If it helps anyone, I'm a women's 8 (sometimes 7.5) in street shoes with socks. My foot length usually measures around 243-246 mm with thin to medium socks. According to a Volumental foot scan I have a low volume foot with low arches and about avg width. I have a narrow heel and the toes and possibly ball splay a bit more than average as I'm often barefoot at home or wear barefoot type or almost-barefoot minimalistic shoes when out (except for Uggs which are also pretty basic). I ordered a Size 5.0 JR and it works great with fairly thick winter socks and 2.0 mm MyFit ankle booties (because my heel is narrow and didn't want any heel lift).
Overall these have been supportive enough for my ankles and comfortable to allow me to progress toward learning basic stride (as opposed to doing the penguin march only). They seem sharp enough to at least skate several times with them, so if you don't have a sharpener nearby immediately that might be fine, especially if you and not the blades are the limiting factor.
There was a small issue initially with the skates which IW customer support remedied in a timely, communicative manner, so A+ for the customer support as well!
